2 August - Weed Management for broadleaf weeds – August

Our maintenance contractor is currently programming (weather dependant) weed spraying for broadleaf weeds within the Parklands. The herbicide application will be undertaken as part of GSP’s annual turf renovation program and as per pesticide notification plan, applying a registered chemical by appropriately trained and qualified staff.

Total Fire Ban - 2 September 2024

The NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) has issued a TOTAL FIRE BAN for Monday 2 September 2024 until 12 midnight. This means no fires in parklands including coal, wood and gas fire BBQs and all fire permits are suspended. Please report any fires quickly by calling 000.

6 May 2024 – Work to commence on the Plough and Harrow Toilet Blocks

Contractors will commence work on site at the Plough and Harrow Toilet Blocks on Monday 6^th May.

Works will be completed in two stages, in order make one toilet block available in each section. With all work expected to be completed by the end of June.

Temporary fencing will be utilised to make working areas safe from the public. 

17 April 20224 - Various tracks closed due to bushland management work

Bush Regeneration Work on Thursday 18 - Friday 19 April, as well as Monday 22 April - Friday 26 April.  Heavy machinery will be working to mechanically remove weed infestations in central and southern parklands.  Temporary track closures will occur during these times as required for safety.  Please look for signage.

[UPDATE] Works will continue from Monday 29 April until Wednesday 1 May. Please look for signage.

8 March 2024 - Asbestos contamination in garden beds at Sydney Dragway

Following reports of asbestos contamination in recycled mulch at other project sites, Sydney Metro have initiated a review into the Sydney Speedway and Sydney Dragway sites. 

As part of this review, testing for asbestos has been conducted at recently landscaped areas at and around both sites. Initial testing results from the samples collected have identified small quantities of bonded asbestos fragments at the Sydney Dragway site. Bonded asbestos is considered by NSW Health to be low risk if in good condition, compared to friable asbestos. Affected areas are fenced off and sign-posted and are not accessible to the public.  

The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has been notified and Greater Sydney Parklands, Sydney Metro and its contractors are providing any assistance and information required.

We are currently working with the EPA and contractors regarding the safe removal of the affected mulch, which will start as soon as possible. 

18 December 2023 - Final Pesticide Use Notification Plan

Greater Sydney Parklands (GSP) has finalised the Pesticide Use Notification Plan for Western Sydney Parklands.

GSP uses pesticides across the parklands estate to treat pests, weeds and diseases. Pesticides are used only when necessary in an effort to protect the environment and park assets, while minimising the public’s potential exposure to chemicals.

About pesticides

Pesticides typically used within the parklands are:

• Selective and non-selective herbicides used for weed control, commonly applied by spray, injection or paint techniques, and sometimes by vehicle-mounted spray equipment.
• Insecticides used in and around buildings and structures to control pests such as cockroaches, ants, wasps and spiders applied by spray treatment, or solid baits or powders.
• Insecticides used to treat outbreaks of plant pests.
• Solid rodenticides used within buildings and locked structures such as barbeques and irrigation boxes.
• Selective pesticides for pest control on sports fields and turf areas, generally applied by vehicle mounted equipment.

About the Final Plan

The Final Pesticide Use Notification Plan has been prepared in accordance with the requirements of the Pesticides Regulation 2017 and the Pesticides Act 1999. The plan outlines when and how the community will be notified of pesticides in use across the parklands.

The Plan applies to the following areas:

• Centennial Parklands including Moore Park and Queens Park
• Callan Park
• Parramatta Park including Wistaria Gardens
• Western Sydney Parklands
• Fernhill Estate

13 – 15 December 2023 – Range Road, Cecil Park CLOSED at night

From Wednesday 13 December to Friday 15 December, Range Road at Cecil Park will be closed at night to allow Transport for NSW to install bridge girders as part of the M12 Motorway construction.

The road will be closed from 7pm each night and reopened at 5am the following morning, and will be under the direction of traffic control.

For visitors to Wylde, please ensure you have left the precinct before 7pm and do not arrive until after 5am during this time.

6 - 7 December - Shale Hills Dog Park CLOSED

Shale Hills Dog Park will be closed on December 6 and 7 for top dressing and aeration works.

From October 2023 – Sydney Water pipe laying work

From Monday 23 October 2023, Sydney Water contractors John Holland will begin installing a section of pipe through Western Sydney Parklands as part of the new Upper South Creek Advanced Water Recycling Centre project at Kemps Creek.

The project includes two new pipelines to be installed underground – a treated water pipeline from Kemps Creek to the Nepean River at Wallacia and a brine water pipeline from Kemps Creek to Sydney Water’s existing wastewater network at Lansdowne. 

The brine water pipeline will be installed underground through the Cecil Hills and Kemps Creek areas of Western Sydney Parklands on both the east and west sides of the M7 motorway.

This work will include excavation of trenches, laying pipe, and reinstating the area with minimal impact to the crucial environment of Western Sydney Parklands.

November 2023 - Plough and Harrow Playground works

A section of the Plough and Harrow playground will be closed from Wednesday November 15 for works to remove the existing playground bridge and replace it with a new timber playground. These works will be complete by Friday 1 December, pending weather delays.

Dog park temporary closures:

Warrigal Run Dog Park will be closed from sunset on Monday August 21 and will reopen on the morning of Wedesday August 23. Shale Hills Dog Park will be closed at sunset on Thursday August 24 and will reopen on the morning of  Saturday 26 August. These closures will coincide with weed spraying, and this will be clearly signed. We ask the community not to use the dog park while this work is underway.

August 16 - 18 - Bridge upgrade works - Wylde MTB & BMX

From August 16 - 18 works will be undertaken at Wylde MTB & BMX to remove temporary bridges connecting the carpark to the facility and install permanent bridge fixtures. The MTB and BMX facilities will remain open (pending weather), a detour will be in place for visitors to access the tracks.

June - August 2023 - Fox control program - Abbostbury

Western Sydney Parklands is working with Calmsley Hill City Farm and Local Land Services on fox control programs across the Abbotsbury area, commencing in June and finishing on August 18. Signage is present throughout the areas where these programs are conducted.

CPE ejector baits are located in bushland, away from recreational areas, tracks and trails. Dogs must be kept on leash at all times to ensure they stay on marked trails, away from the baits. Please keep a close eye on pets when walking in the areas signed as having baits present.

June 2023 - Bush regeneration works - Moonrise Loop

Weed removal works will be completed on June 22, 23 and 27 on a section of the Moonrise Loop near Ginger Meggs Memorial. As these works require heavy machinery a section of the track will be closed to visitors during this time. Visitors will be able to detour around the works and complete the remainder of the loop, please adhere to signage on site and direction from contractors and rangers.

June 2023 - Disabled toilet out of order - Wylde MTB & BMX

The disabled toiled at Wylde MTB & BMX is currently out of order and not open for visitor use. All other toilets within Wylde are open and operational. Repair works are currently underway.

June 2023 - Small dog area closed - Shale Hills Dog Park

One of the two areas of Shale Hills Dog Park will be closed for construction improvement works from June 14 - 15, on June 19 and from June 21 - 26. The other area will remain open for visitor use.

The viewing deck at Abbotsbury Pond in Plough and Harrow will be closed for maintenance works from June 12 - 30. The area will be temporarily fenced off while these works are completed.

May 2023 - Wylde track resurfacing

Update: Some works have been rescheduled. As a result the track will reopen ahead of schedule on Friday 5 May but will be closed on Wednesday 10 May to complete works.

The Wylde BMX track will be closed from Wednesday 3 - Friday 5 May for resurfacing works, weather permitting. Once resurfaced the track polymer must cure before the track can be reopened. It is important that riders do not use the track prior to it reopening to ensure the repaired surface is not damaged, requiring further repair works and closures. The track is scheduled to reopen on Saturday 6 May.

April - June 2023 - Landscaping works - Shale Hills Dog Park

From April - June landscaping works will be conducted at Shale Hills Dog Park. The works will include drainage swale repairs, drainage line installation, deco repairs, landscaping and installation of a concrete foot pad. The areas where works are being undertaken will be fenced off and the remainder of the dog park will remain open to visitors during this time. Car parking will still be available in the area throughout the works.

From April 24 - 30 repair works will be undertaken in the eastern section of the Plough & Harrow carpark. As part of these works 10 parking spaces and 1 accessible parking space will be unavailable for visitor use. Other regular and accessible parking spaces will be available nearby.

Due to damage from vandalism the water was temporarily turned off at Bungarribee Park on the morning of April 18th. Repairs have now been completed and water has been restored to this area of the park.

April 2023 - Tree planting - Wylde MTB trails

Visitors please be aware Muru Mittigar will be undertaking tree planting works in the area surrounding the Wylde MTB trails from April 10 - 31. These works will not require the trails to be closed to visitors, but we ask riders to be mindful of workers on site and exercise caution when riding in areas where they are working.

This tree planting is taking place as part of the Premier's Priority Tree Planting Program.

February 2023 – Sydney Water preliminary investigations – Cecil Park and Cowpasture

Visitors please be aware Sydney Water is undertaking preliminary works in the Cecil Park and Cowpasture precincts of Western Sydney Parklands for its new wastewater pipeline to support the new Upper South Creek Advanced Water Recycling Centre at Kemps Creek.

Work includes ongoing survey, locating services and investigating ground conditions to inform final detailed designs for the pipeline.

Bungarribee Park Play Tower Temporary Closure - Friday 23rd September 2022

The Bungarribee Park Play Tower will be temporarily closed (fenced off) to visitors for an internal and external deep clean of all surfaces from 7am on Friday 23^rd September until completed in the afternoon.

We ask visitors to please be mindful of machinery and contractors who will be on site to conduct this work. Please note that some other play elements may also be sectioned off depending on fall zones and wind direction on the day. Contractors will do their best to minimise the impact on visitors as this work occurs and will ensure the play areas remain partially open where possible. Thank you for your understanding. 

Bungarribee playground vandalism repairs (December 2022)

The Bungaribee Play Tower will be closed for repairs following vandalism from 6am Tuesday 6th of December - 6pm Friday 9th December. Some other areas of the playground may also be closed to ensure the safety of visitors during these works.

What we are doing in response to COVID-19

Safeguarding the health and safety of our visitors and staff is core to what we do at Western Sydney Parklands. We are closely monitoring and responding to Government health advice and putting in place measures to protect our community.

Restrictions have further eased in NSW, resulting in changes for visitors to Western Sydney Parklands:

• Outdoor gatherings – there is no limit on the number of people who can attend a gathering in our Parklands. Our picnic spots are open for bookings.
• COVID-19 Safe QR check-ins are only required for music festivals with more than 1,000 people.  
• Masks are not required in outdoor settings. Practise safe social distancing (1.5m) and wear a face mask in environments where this is not possible.

June 2022 – Bungarribee playground upgrades

The large swing area at Bungarribee playground will be closed to visitors from Monday 6^th June to Friday 10^th June. We ask visitors to please be mindful of contractors who will be on site to install large sandstone blocks which will help prevent playground sand from blowing away in high winds. Please note all eight swings will be unavailable during this time.

From Tuesday 14^th – Friday 17^th June, some of the playground areas will be closed to visitors throughout the week while contractors install new soft fall sand. We will do our best to minimise the impact on visitors as this occurs and ensure the play areas remain partially open where possible.

Bungarribee playground upgrades and vandalism repairs (October 2022)

The top section of the Bungaribee Play Tower will be closed for repairs following vandalism this weekend and will reopen to the public early next week.

The large swing area at Bungarribee playground will be closed to visitors from Tuesday 25^th October to Friday 28^th October. We ask visitors to please be mindful of contractors who will be on site to install a few more large sandstone blocks which will help prevent playground sand from blowing away in high winds. Snakes sighted in the parklands

Snakes have recently been sighted in Western Sydney Parklands. Please remember the Parklands is a space we share with wildlife, including snakes.

If you do spot a snake, stay calm and make no sudden movements. Please do not attempt to touch, or move the snake and slowly keep your distance. If walking your dog, keep it on a leash. We encourage you to avoid area's with long grass as it may startle a snake in its habitat. You can also report snake sightings to the rangers on 0459 883 834. If it's an emergency, call 000 immediately.

In the unlikely event that you are bitten, stay as still as possible, apply compression to the bite and call 000.

Wylde BMX racetrack closed for repairs (Thursday 1st - Friday 2nd December)

The Wylde BMX racetrack will be closed for emergency repairs from Thursday 1st to Friday 2nd of December. The track will be inaccessible to riders during this time. Wylde MTB trails and Pump Track will remain open pending suitable weather. Please always check the status page to ensure the track is open before visiting.

Western Sydney Parklands may be subject to increased rainfall and high winds that could cause flooding, fallen trees and hazardous conditions for visitors. These conditions are on top of the recent significant rainfall across Sydney that has impacted the regular maintenance of our lawns, garden beds and bushland areas. Please be mindful that the tracks and trails network may be more severely affected, particularly in the northern Parklands tracks around Eastern Creek.

The safety of our park users is paramount. Please rethink your visit to our Parklands during this time and check this page regularly for updates on closures.

If you are in our Parklands, please be aware of your surroundings and do not go near or enter flooded water bodies and cross flooded roadways. Western Sydney Parklands will reopen to the public at 8am on Thursday 10 March 2022.

Please be aware that parts of the Parklands have experienced substantial damage from this week’s rain event. We ask you to please:

• Follow all signage for your own safety
• Do not go near or enter flooded water bodies or cross flooded roadways
• Understand that not all play equipment will be available

Our dedicated landscape and maintenance crews have begun the clean-up in the picnic areas and playgrounds but it may take some weeks before many bush and track areas are fully repaired. We ask the community to please bear with us while we return Western Sydney Parklands to looking its best.

June 2022 – Works happening at Warrigal Dog Run and Greenbelt Car Park  

Following requests from the community, a new dividing fence will be installed at the Warrigal Dog Run to create two separate areas for dogs to play freely.

The work will begin Tuesday 21 June and will take approximately one week to complete. The Warrigal Dog Run will remain open during this time but visitors are asked to please be mindful of the work. 

Work will also begin Tuesday 21 June to install new concrete wheel stops in the car parking bays at the Greenbelt Car Park. The majority of the car park will remain available to visitors throughout the week.

June 2022 – The Dairy closed to vehicles

The Dairy will be closed to vehicles from Monday 27 June – Wednesday 29 June to allow repairs to the access road.

The Dairy is still accessible by foot via Lizard Log and the walking trails will remain open.

3 July 2022 – SEVERE WEATHER EVENT

A severe weather event occurring across Greater Sydney is currently impacting conditions in our Parklands.

Western Sydney Parklands may be subject to increased rainfall and high winds that could cause flooding, fallen trees and hazardous conditions for visitors. These conditions are on top of the recent significant rainfall across Sydney that has impacted the regular maintenance of our lawns, garden beds and bushland areas. Please be mindful that the tracks and trails network may be more severely affected, particularly in the northern Parklands tracks around Eastern Creek.

The safety of our park users is paramount. Please use caution during your visit to our Parklands during this time and check this page regularly for updates on closures.

If you are in our Parklands, please be aware of your surroundings and do not go near or enter flooded water bodies and cross flooded roadways. Major event notice - Science in the Scrub, Sunday 14 August

Western Sydney Parklands will be hosting National Science Week’s Science in the Scrub, a free, family fun day out at Lizard Log on Sunday 14 August 2022. National Science Week is Australia’s annual celebration of science and technology.

The event will take place at the Lizard Log Amphitheatre and surrounds on Sunday 14 August starting at 11:00am and finishing at 3:00pm. Event set-up and pack-down will take place the day before and after.

There are no planned gate or road closures for this event and traffic management will be operating on the day to minimise disruption to park visitors.
